On April…

It’s hard to believe it’s been a little over a month since I posted on this blog! (A vent-free month for you guys on my end, very niiice.)

The month was full of soccer, appointments/meetings, hustling the kids here and there, and spring break, which was 10 days long this year. Oh, and I broke the same tooth twice (ouch) and had to have it pulled (not as bad as I thought it would be). All of that, plus I did the A to Z Challenge for my other blog, which ended up being a bit more time consuming than I had anticipated.

But the blog-every-day thing is done with for now, as is soccer, dealing with school projects, plus school will be over in two and a half weeks. We’ll be doing something for our anniversary and then go on vacation, which we’re all looking forward to. Now, if we can just get ourselves healthy for vacation — a stomach bug worked its way through our house again this week, plus the kids and I have nasty colds now. Of course, if you remember posts from last month/earlier in the year, you know that’s nothing new for us.

That’s about all there is to report for now. For those of you I haven’t been able to keep up with over the past month, I hope all is well!

  1. Sounds a lot like some issues we’ve been dealing with… major painful dental issues for me (and 1st-time check-ups for the twins), this week’s tummy bug, vacations (we did ours already!) and then there’s the ADHD thing…

First, my then-1st-grader’s school didn’t want to give her an IEP because she hadn’t been definitively diagnosed. So last year, we got her formally evaluated and I met with the school to start the process. In the meantime, her doc started her on medications. Now (in the 3rd grade) the school says she doing so much better they want to “hold off” on an Individualized Education Plan for her. Problem is, she hates the medicine, she’s underweight and not gaining, and the meds don’t help her at all at home!!! I’m almost at my wit’s end with this!

Sorry, I went off on a tangent on your blog. Anyway, I’m so glad to see you back and hope and pray things are on the up and up for you!

    • Ugh, I’m sorry you’re dealing with those issues, too. Baby Girl’s first dentist visit was last week, too, but thankfully my husband took care of that.

Pardon my language, but what bullshit. Print this off and show it to them, straight from the gov:
      https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/dcl-know-rights-201607-504.pdf

When conducting the disability evaluation, your school district cannot consider the positive effects of
mitigating measures in determining if a student has a disability. For example, if your daughter uses
medication to address ADHD, the school district cannot consider the positive effects of that medication
as a basis to determine she does not have a disability.

Get their refusal in writing and appeal it. I bet they’ll change their tune a little then if you mention that law and hint at appealing. Even if they don’t go for the IEP, they can put a 504 Plan in plan and give her accommodations, and this costs them nothing. When I went to LM’s meeting, I was prepared for them to deny him because he tests high, but he still meets the impairment of major life functions requirement (and it’d be worse without medication), so I had all this stuff ready and was ready for battle 😉

Thank you! I’ll be praying for you as well. ❤

  2. So what you’re saying is that LM doesn’t need a 504, he just needs the right teacher 🙂 That’s the same for Crash… he really doesn’t need meds, he needs the right teacher. Unfortunately he doesn’t have the right teacher this year so he get meds instead.
